King Salmon Prices Per Pound

Why Copper River King Salmon Is So Expensive | So Expensive Food | Business Insider

The cheapest king salmon prices are for Ora King salmon, a special breed of farm-raised king salmon thats produced in New Zealand. This type of salmon is still highly coveted and popular with restaurants who want to have king salmon on their menu without losing their profit margin altogether. The price for Ora Kings is usually around $25-$30 per pound.

The price for wild Alaskan king salmon is more like $35-$50 per pound when including shipping costs. In some cases, wild king salmon prices can reach $75 per pound or more. White king salmon, also known as ivory king salmon, is another kind of wild-caught king salmon. It may or may not be priced slightly higher than the more common red king variety. The taste and texture are indistinguishable. Some people may prefer the novelty of white king salmon others may think its a weird look for salmon.

Finally, weve noticed that the minimum order for king salmon is a little less than other wild salmon, but also that free shipping is somewhat less common. Its important to look at this information closely before choosing your company and completing your order so that you know what youre getting and how much youre paying in total. The Health Benefits Of Salmon

Fresh Farmed Atlantic Salmon Fillet, price per lb

Its no secret that salmon is a healthy food choice. But what about specifically king? This type of salmon is fattier than other varieties, like Keta and Coho. As a result, the nutritional content for king salmon will be slightly different. A 6-ounce serving of Alaskan king salmon has 304 calories, 17.7 grams of fat, and 33.9 grams of protein. By contrast, the more widely available Keta salmon has 204 calories and 34 grams of protein. This means kings are more caloric and have a greater fat content than most other types of salmon.

Still, health is more complicated than calorie numbers and protein content. Kings are an excellent source of omega-3 fatty acids and, while they have less protein than other types, are still a great source of high-quality protein. Kings are also a fantastic source of essential nutrients, like selenium, potassium, and phosphorous. Plus, its easy to consume king salmon in moderation theres so little of it to go around that you wont likely have the opportunity to eat more than a few servings of this indulgent fish.

Peter Pan Posts $110 Per Pound For Bristol Bay Sockeye

Peter Pan Seafood shook up the worlds largest wild salmon run June 19 with the announcement it will pay a base price of $1.10 per pound for sockeye salmon in Bristol Bay, Alaska.

The price upholds reports of a strong market for wild sockeye and is a welcome development for Bristol Bay fishermen, who were disappointed by last seasons base price of $0.75.

Peter Pans announcement also represents a disruption in the recent buying habits of processors in Bristol Bay, where typically ex-vessel prices are not announced until late July, when most of the landings are in.

The early price is offered to intentionally put the fleet at ease that they will receive a fair price for the long hours and hard work they are about to endure participating in the worlds largest sockeye fishery. Moreover, Peter Pan hopes the surprise early announcement, with a significant bump over 2020, helps fishermen and their families plan their finances for the year in this great time of uncertainty, the company said in a news release.

Once one company announces a base price, other buyers are essentially obligated to match that price or risk losing their fishermen to a higher bidder. That means major processors like OBI Seafoods, Trident Seafoods, and Silver Bay Seafoods will all likely be paying out the same base price.

Under new ownership since the beginning of the year, Peter Pan also made waves in the Copper River fishery last month when it offered $12.60 for early-season sockeye.

Sockeye Salmon Retail Prices At Record Winter Highs But Uncertainty Looms

Retail prices for sockeye salmon have been at historical highs for the past three months, largely driven by a 25 percent drop in global supply in 2020.

For Q1 up through 27 January, wild sockeye salmon fillets averaged USD 12.07 , the highest quarterly average since 2012, according to figures cited by the Bristol Bay Regional Seafood Development Association .

BBRSDA Executive Director Andy Wink said sockeye prices have spiked higher during the boreal summer, when the fresh market is being fed by fisheries in Alaska, Russia, and Japan, but these are the highest prices recorded for the winter months.

Retail prices are at or above record levels, at least for this time of year. Its not like weve never had sockeye prices this high, its just that weve never had them this high at this point in the year, Wink told SeafoodSource, confirming that November, December, and January broke records.

Last season, global sockeye supply dipped to 298 million pounds, around 25 percent below the previous five-year average of 394 million pounds. Bristol Bay provided 66 percent of the global catch last season with 196 million pounds, while Alaskas statewide contribution was 226 million pounds. Russia managed just 67 million pounds of sockeye after turning in closer to 100 million pounds annually over the five previous years.

Wink said low supply is part of what is driving high prices, but it does not tell the whole story.

How To Determine Salmons Average Price

Copper River salmon arrives in Seattle

Truth be told, there is no average price for salmon as there are so many factors that go into determining what it costs. Such factors include the following.

  • Farm-Raised or Wild

In other words, if you live along the coast near where salmon is caught, then you probably will experience a lower average price compared to someone living in the interior. Because fresh salmon is desired, the shipping costs to location well inside the country will add to the price.

Plus, because of the mating habits of salmon, they are found in different locations depending on the time of year. That means during certain times they may be harder to find and catch which will affect the average price.

In addition, not all salmon are the same type. Depending on their species, it may be that some will be more available and lower priced than others. For example, Atlantic salmon is probably going to be cheaper if you live along the Atlantic coast compared to the Pacific coast. However, with Atlantic salmon in the wild being so scarce, it is most likely that such salmon will be farmed.

Farm-raised is quite common with salmon, particularly Atlantic salmon. This means that much like chickens, the salmon is raised in ponds or bodies of water that are farmed from time to time, so the salmon can be transported to the market. Farm-raised is generally cheaper compared to salmon that has been fished from the sea. But again, that depends on the location and number in which the salmon are sold.

We ordered the 10lb box and are very happy with the fish. It is better than any we have been able to get here locally. Since we live in a very rural part of Colorado, we were concerned about delivery. We also had some travel concerns as to when we would be home to accept delivery. Working with Josh in customer service, they were able to ship at a time that worked for us. The product came on time and in perfect condition.

We couldn’t be happier and will order again.

    Sockeye Salmon Price per Pound

As a rough estimate, sockeye salmon might cost somewhere between $15-$30 per poundor even more for small orders with higher delivery costs. To get all the way down to $15 per pound, you usually need to join some kind of local buying club or make a bulk purchase. Even then, the total price may end up being more like $16-$20 per pound. Because of varying delivery costs and minimum order sizes, the Alaskan salmon company with the best prices depends on how much youre ordering and the delivery method being used.

Order at least 5 pounds of sockeye salmon from Wild Alaska Direct, and the price is $18.99 per pound with free delivery. The Pride of Bristol Bay offers sockeye prices as low as $16.99 per pound with delivery, but you must order a minimum of 20 lbs. In this context, its worth knowing that vacuum-sealed salmon will generally maintain its premium level of freshness for about 6 months. We recommend you eat vacuum-sealed salmon within 12 months of packaging at the latest.

    Harvesting, Preparation, Packaging

Most people also prefer at least some level of preparation for their salmon, such as removing the small pin bones and cutting large salmon fillets into individual portions. Some wild salmon companies also provide bone-in, whole salmon fillets. Next, companies need to determine how much ice and gel-packs to use to ensure the salmon remains safely frozen throughout the shipping and delivery process.

Is Frozen Salmon Actually Fresher Than Fresh Salmon

Some even argue that frozen salmon is fresher than fresh salmon due to the fact that the fish is frozen almost immediately to lock in the freshness.

When its defrosted, it may taste closer to a 1-day old fish than the fresh salmon that has been sitting in Costcos refrigerator or your own for at least a day.

Average Price Of King Salmon Per Pound: $18 Per Pound

Because King salmon is mostly caught in the wild, the average price tends to be higher compared to Atlantic salmon which is almost exclusively farmed. The King salmon can be found in the North Pacific Ocean from the coast of California up to Alaska. The fish has also made its way across the Pacific to Japan and Siberia. The King Salmon has been introduced to other parts of the world as well, including the Great Lakes in America.

Because the fish is raised wild, it tends to be more expensive compared to farm-raised fish where the populations can be controlled. In addition, the King salmon tends to be highly prized and sought-after, which also boosts the price.

How Much Does Smoked Salmon Cost

The price of smoked salmon per pound depends on the quality, as well as the availability. In , the smoked salmon price per kg for Atlantic salmon was 61.22 NOK per kg, or $7.11. The price is on par with the cost in recent years. Atlantic salmon was available in June 2019 ranging from $8 to $12 per pound.

The smoked salmon price per pound in 2019 for wild-caught varieties was $11 to $20. The farm raised smoked salmon price is less expensive than the wild-caught salmon because the farm raised type should theoretically be in ready supply regardless of the time of year or the season.

The reason why the wild-caught salmon has a broader range is due to cost differences based on type. Wild Sockeye is on the lower end of the spectrum and can approach $11 to $14 per pound. However, Copper River Salmon and King Salmon can exceed $20. For those on a budget, Pink Salmon is perhaps the most ideal since it is known to drop below the $6 per pound price point.

Fresh or frozen salmon delivered results in a significant distinction for the prices. Since the taste is considered by many to notably change once frozen, there is a premium that is placed on fresh salmon. Most commonly, fresh in-demand salmon will cost $2 to $5 more per pound than frozen salmon. The smoked salmon price is linked to each particular salmon types season.
