How Does The Safe Catch Ahi Tuna Taste

I mix up this tuna with some Primal Kitchen Chipotle Lime Mayonnaise and pickle relish to make a pretty awesome tuna fish salad sandwich. I use the whole can to make a monster sandwich and it makes me happy!

I did not pick up any meaningful flavor differences between this tuna and any other canned tuna I have eaten but I sure felt better about myself while I was eating it.

This tuna makes a tasty, healthy and filling lunch that I can safely enjoy 3-4 times a week.

Health Benefits Of Natural Catch Tuna

For Maximum Omega3 Benefit Do Not Drain

Conventional brands pre-cook fish on racks, draining away healthy nutrients and Omega3 oils. It is then packed in water, oil or often a GMO broth and cooked again. This impairs natural flavor and texture.

Safe Catch does it differently. We hand pack raw, sashimi-grade fish in the can and then slow cook each one to perfection in its own natural juices. This retains 100% of the tunaâs vital oils and freshness.

Do not drain Safe Catch tuna. There are no additives and fillersâjust pure tuna in each can!

Safe Catch Tuna Mercury Ad Claims Panned As Misleading By Bbb Nfi

The Better Business Bureaus National Advertising Division has determined pouched and canned tuna supplier Safe Catch provided a reasonable basis for several mercury and sustainability ad claims, but recommended that others be modified or discontinued.

NAD is not affiliated with the Better Business Bureau. It is a division of BBB National Programs, an independent non-profit organization.

The National Fisheries Institute , a trade group representing the U.S. seafood industry including some of the largest processors of canned and pouched tuna in the United States, requested the review of Safe Catchs ad claims.

This is a significant ruling from BBB National Programs, and we are pleased with NADs determination that Safe Catch should discontinue or modify a variety of its misleading claims, NFI Director of Communications Melaina Lewis told SeafoodSource.

The NAD said parts of Safe Catchs advertising promotes the unsupported and falsely disparaging message that other commercially available brands of tuna use fish that are dangerous.

This is a significant finding that will go a long way in getting rid of this hyperbolic and misleading message, Lewis said.

The supplier may also continue to use the product name Safe Catch, the NAD ruled.

Therefore, NAD recommended that the advertiser discontinue the graphic and that its advertising avoid the implication that consumers face significant health risks associated with eating tuna other than Safe Catch, NAD said.

Oil Packed Vs Water Packed

Some brands carry both oil- and water-packed tuna, and sometimes just tuna and salt. It’s really up to you to decide your preference. From a nutrition perspective, beware of tuna packed in soybean oil. If you’re going to go for oil-packed tuna, olive oil packs more nutrients and is a better option. On the other hand, if you’re watching fat intake, oil-packed will be higher in calories than water packed .

Safe Catch Tuna Is Here To Save You From What

By NFI, February 20, 2018

The Safe Catch tuna brand has stoked unwarranted consumer fear for years by pitching their product as containing the lowest mercury of any brand. The implication, without any scientific basis, is that other brands somehow represent a genuine health risk, and that this risk justifies charging families on a budget triple the price, or more, for safe catch canned tuna.

Indeed, the companys very existence hinges on promoting the dangerous idea that Americans consuming a few cans of tuna a week might be at risk of mercury poisoning. Safe Catch tuna founder Sean Wittenberg claims that his own mother was poisoned by doing just that. But he presents zero evidence of any kind to support this claim. In fact, there has never been a case of mercury toxicity from the normal consumption of commercial seafood recorded in any American medical journal.

Consumer mercury content standards are already extremely rigorous. Specifically, the FDAs recommended limit for mercury in seafood has a ten-fold safety-factor built in. The FDAs Net Effects report, which is based on 100 peer-reviewed studies, found that even a pregnant woman could eat tuna for breakfast, lunch, and dinner, every day of the week, without worry.

Is Safe Catch Telling The Truth About Mercury Levels

Safe Catch Elite Wild Tuna, 5 oz can

In 2017 one of the leaders in the world of sustainable tuna, Wild Planet, issued a scathing memo that, while not mentioning the Safe Catch brand by name, was clearly aimed at Safe Catch customers.

A sample of the text from the memo is below:

We respectfully call attention to an important point: any brand making a claim of safer seafood rightfullybears the burden of proof but what would constitute proof? We suggest three points:

Provide third-party verification as to the efficacy of their testing equipment and methodology Deliver third-party accreditation that every fish is being tested Produce third-party corroboration that no product available in the marketplace exceeds self-proclaimedstrict mercury limits.

None of this information is supplied by any company making these mercury claims. There is no third-partyevidence on any tuna companys website verifying ANY of the extravagant claimsmade. This raises questions which rightly deserve answers.

A broad summarization of the Wild Planet statement is that: The technical ability to test every fish for mercury to such an incredibly low level in the field has never been demonstrated. Any company that claims to have such technology should be viewed as suspect until the company proves such technology exists.

The Credibility of Safe Catch

I found an article published in BusinessWire about the founding of Safe Catch that does make the companys testing technology seem plausible.

A short quote from the article is below:

Best Canned Tunas On The Market And 4 To Stay Away From

Canned or jarred tuna is a convenient pantry protein relied on for a quick lunch or dinner. However, there’s a huge range in product quality on the market. Between sustainability, nutrition, and health, there’s a lot to consider before stocking up on tuna.

Resources like the Monterey Bay Aquarium Seafood Watch Site or Greenpeace’s canned tuna report, which ranks 20 well known brands for their sustainability, as well as ethical and fair trade practices, are good places to start making more informed choices with canned fish.

There are a few main commercial species of tuna used in canning: albacore tuna is often sold as ‘white tuna meat’ and often caught in the Pacific . Skipjack tuna is sold as ‘light’ tuna. Most of the Pacific skipjack tuna comes from the western and central Pacific ocean. Yellowfin tuna can be canned as light tuna and mixed with skipjack.

What’s incredibly frustrating is that at a glance, lots of tuna brands seem to have good nutrition, and the language on their website makes you think they’re doing their part in responsible fishing and environmental practices. But a quick search of news articles tells you otherwise and, sadly, many common tuna brands aren’t doing their part to be responsible.

How To Pick The Best Canned Tuna

Tuna is an inexpensive protein that’s shelf stable. It’s a good source of omega-3 fatty acids, especially EPA and DHA, which are important for heart, brain, and eye health. Albacore and bluefin tuna have the highest levels of omega-3s followed by skipjack and yellowfin. Here are some things to look out for when picking up canned tuna:

  • Look for BPA-free cans.

How We Sell High Quality Tuna At An Affordable Price

We Tried 15 Canned Tuna Brands & This One Was The Best

Typically, a successful Tuna company makes a deal with a canner who has the tuna and sells it to them at a wholesale price. That company then marks up the price so that when it sells, they make a profit. However, in our situation, we run all phases of the canning, packing and distribution process and sell it directly to the consumer.

There is no middleman marking up the price to take extra money out of your pocket. Enjoy high quality tuna at prices you will never find anywhere else.

Tonnino Tuna Fillets In Spring Water

A higher end gourmet product from a Costa Rican brand, Tonnino tuna is definitely an experience in comparison to standard tuna cans. It comes in glass jars, packed in water or olive oil, and in a variety of flavors including garlic, capers, and jalapeño. The brand only sources from vessels registered with CIATT, a group that ensures conservation of resources and on-board observers who guarantee no species other than tuna get caught in the mix. They use responsible fishing methods and give back to their local community. While this brand has slightly higher sodium levels than others, it shouldn’t be a deal breaker.

Bumble Bee Solid White Albacore In Vegetable Oil

Bumble Bee calls their products ‘preferred by customers when compared to Starkist’ and a variety of other brands. But can we talk about tuna in soybean oil? While the ingredients are simple, there’s no need for adding soybean oil to tuna alongside vegetable broth and sea salt. Soybean oil is an unsaturated fat, but it doesn’t offer benefits like olive oil does. And when it comes to responsible fishing, watch out for this brand. While their marketing information states they are responsibly harvested from fisheries, Greenpeace advises avoiding this brand’s greenwashing. You may also find it interesting that their CEO was recently convicted of price fixing, and the company accused of possible human rights and animal rights violations.

What About Mercury Levels

Safe Catch Wild Albacore Tuna, No Salt Added, 5 oz can

It’s important to note that nearly all fish contain some amount of mercury, and tuna actually has less than other varieties like swordfish or mackerel. However, you may want to enjoy tuna in moderation, especially if youre pregnant, breastfeeding or feeding young children. The FDA suggests limiting the consumption of white/albacore or yellowfin tuna to one serving per week, and skipjack tuna to two to three servings per week.

In support of the 2015-2020 Dietary Guidelines for Americans, the FDA recommends that adults consume at least 8 ounces of seafood per week and that women who are pregnant or breastfeeding consume 8-12 ounces of seafood per week, opting for choices that are lower in mercury.

Ultimately, the type of canned tuna you choose to eat will depend on your flavor preferences and dietary needs. The most common types of canned tuna at the store are white or light tuna. “White” tuna is albacore. “Light” can be skipjack, yellowfin, bigeye, or a combination. White tuna has a milder flavor than fishier light tuna and is higher in omega-3 fatty acids, but it can also be higher in mercury. Experiment with the type of tuna you prefer, and incorporate your top picks in moderation as part of a balanced diet.
