Ginataang Yellow Fin Tuna is another version of fish cooked in coconut cream. I used yellow fin tuna fillet for this recipe. I got this fish frozen in a package composed of three large fillets. The thing that I was not expecting is the place where I got this. Nearby supermarkets and Asian stores do not have any yellow fin available during that day. However, I saw this frozen package at Target while shopping for other items.
This yellow fin tuna dish is special because I searched almost everywhere during the day to find this type of fish and was able to find it almost at the end of the day. I also thought that using coconut cream made this dish richer and flavorful. The greens that I used were fresh frozen bitter melon leaves. These are known as dahon ng ampalaya in the Philippines. I also had some fish sauce and red pepper flakes for that extra kick.
The tuna was partially cooked beforehand by pan frying it for a minute on both sides. This helps the fish maintain its shape while being cooked in coconut cream. I also made sure that the garlic, onions, and ginger were cooked enough to the point that the natural flavors just blends-in easily with any ingredient. This makes it easy for the coconut cream to absorb all its flavors, which makes it very tasty.

Choosing yellowfin tuna steaks that are not too thin is important, according to Jamie Oliver. In his YouTube video “How to Cook Tuna Steak,” the celebrity chef recommends using steaks that are at least three-quarters of an inch thick. These are the steps he recommends for perfectly pan-seared tuna.
- Season and oil: Use a few crushed coriander and fennel seeds along with some salt and black pepper to season both sides of the yellowfin tuna steak. Follow by massaging both sides with some olive oil.
- Add to the pan: Use a dry non stick pan heated to high so the tuna sizzles immediately on touching the metal. You can see the progression of the heat into the fish, turning it from red to greyish-brown as it cooks.
- Turn over: Turn after about 1 Â½ to two minutes, at this point adding a small drizzle of oil to the pan to keep it sizzling nicely. After another 1 Â½ to two minutes the yellowfin should be cooked to rare, which is what chefs recommend for the best eating quality.

The tuna needs to marinate in olive oil overnight and then be cooked in oil in a saucepan on medium level. What To Serve With Ahi Tuna
I like sprinkling some sliced green onions on top of the sliced ahi tuna, along with some toasted sesame seeds and a squeeze of fresh lime juice.
Its DELICIOUS served in a rice bowl with green beans or broccoli and a drizzle of spicy mayo or other sauce.
Or, for a super healthy and low-carb meal, serve it on a bed of greens with an Asian-style dressing. .
Alternatively, this would be great in a seared tuna poke bowl. Poke bowls are usually made with raw fish, but I think this fish, seared perhaps for a little less time than normal, cut up into cubes, would be excellent in a poke bowl.
I think this sliced tuna steak would be amazing on top of avocado toast, too!
How To Make Air Fryer Tuna Steaks

I recommend using wild-caught ahi tuna in this recipe. Wild-caught fish tends to contain more flavor and nutrients.
- Pull your raw tuna steaks out of the fridge.
- Put together your marinade by combining the soy sauce, minced ginger, rice vinegar, honey, and sesame oil. I like to mince my ginger by using an inexpensive Microplane.
- Add the air fryer tuna steak to the marinade. Cover and place in the fridge for 20 to 30 minutes.
